Human Nutrition

“We are what we eat”. Food shapes us not just physically but mentally as well. Our diet is constantly being influenced by social and economic factors. The individual preferences, cultural traditions, and geographical circumstances create different dietary patterns. However, the basic nutrient requirements remain the same. One must have adequate macronutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water, and micronutrients that consist of vitamins and minerals.

The consumption of processed, sweet, and highly salted food drains the essential nutrients of the body and makes it weak to function properly. Today’s busy lifestyle doesn’t give people time to take proper care of their health. Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre all are required in adequate amounts for the body to survive properly.

Maintaining your weight is not the exact goal of being healthy. Being healthy involves being mentally and physically fit. For that you need to have good health and a better immunity. If the nutrients are not taken in the recommended amount the chances of malnutrition, non communicable diseases, including heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. become common irrespective of the ages and gender.

There has been a very high consumption of food that comes from inorganic farms which use high quantities of harmful chemicals to grow food. Even though these chemicals give a good look to the food produced, rip off all the nutrient content from the fruits, vegetables and grains. When you eat such food grown in inorganic farms the harmful chemicals settle in your body and damage it. These foods are also very low in nutrient content so they do not give benefits to your body in terms of nourishment. Consuming a healthy diet along with some organic supplements helps your body prevent malnutrition, acute and chronic diseases and gives you a healthier, stronger, and glowing body.

Proteins

The body’s immune system and muscles are supported by protein which consist of amino acids. Protein helps our body to repair the damaged cells, create new cells and help in growth. It is also helpful in the synthesis of some enzymes and hormones in the body.

Carbohydrates and fats

Carbohydrates and fats are crucial as they provide energy to the body to carry out different life processes and activities. Fats also maintain healthy skin and help regulate blood pressure.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals are required in much less quantities but play a very important role. Minerals are essential in maintaining a healthy structure of the body and to maintain different activities.

Why is proper nutrition important?

  • Proper nutrition helps you:
  • Lowering the risk of getting illnesses such as heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer.
  • It boosts your mental health.
  • It improves overall well being.
  • It saves your money because when you are healthy you spend less on medical expenses.

Nutrition for kids and mothers

Kids need more nutrients so that they can grow into healthy individuals. Children and infants need a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products and protein rich food. During pregnancy, for the proper development of the child’s immune system, body metabolism and for the organs to function properly, a nutrient rich diet is required. The amount of nutrition that a baby gets in the womb is crucial to strengthen the baby.

If a mother lacks calories, proteins, carbohydrates and fats during pregnancy, it affects the nervous system and body development of the baby. Thus, it is essential that pregnant females get required nutrients.

What are the factors that influence nutrition needs?

Age:

Human body needs different sets of nutrients at different stages of life, for example the need of calcium and phosphorus is very high during childhood but with increasing age the requirement decreases. Similarly, the need for Vitamin C increases overtime with age. Older adults also have significant decreases in vitamin D production so they need some vitamin D supplements to help maintain the activities. Similarly, the gastrointestinal tract absorbs less magnesium and vitamin B12 making it difficult to absorb from the body.

Gender:

Nutrition needs are also influenced by gender. Women as compared to men require more calcium and iron. They need calcium and iron supplement sometimes and vitamin D as well to felicitate the calcium absorption in the body. Likewise during pregnancy the requirement for iron, zinc, and vitamins increases  multifold.

Lifestyle:

The kind of lifestyle that you have influences the nutritional needs, for example in urban society due to poor diet obesity, blood pressure, diabetes are very common.
